The Artistry of E.Toh
Erica Toh is a Hawke’s Bay–based artist and mother working in textured art and sculptural relief, creating refined, one-of-a-kind works shaped by texture, light and form. Her practice is grounded in stillness, simplicity and attentive seeing, drawing inspiration from native flora and fauna, botanical forms, landscapes, and the quiet details of the natural world.
Working across textured art and sculptural relief, Erica builds and shapes each piece by hand. Her intentionally restrained palette—often white or gold—allows surface, shadow, depth and texture to become integral to the composition, revealing details that shift subtly as the light changes throughout the day.
Motherhood has also shaped the way Erica approaches her creative practice. In a world that can feel loud, fast and overstimulating, art has become a place to return to stillness—to slow down, become present and pay attention. That same sense of quiet is what she hopes to offer through her work.
Each artwork is created slowly and individually. Her sculptural works are made without moulds, allowing the subtle variations and marks of the hand to give every piece its own distinct presence. Balancing contemporary minimalism with a sense of reverence for both material and subject, her work invites viewers to pause, look more closely and notice the beauty that is so often overlooked.
Her work is inspired by nature, beauty and becoming—not only what exists around us, but the continual process of growth, change and discovering who we are.
