My name is Erica Toh, and I’m a textured art and sculptural relief artist and mother based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. My practice is grounded in stillness, simplicity and attentive seeing, exploring the relationship between texture, light and form through hand-sculpted reliefs.
Much of my inspiration comes from the natural world—native flora and fauna, botanical forms, landscapes, and the quiet structures and details that are so easily overlooked. I’m drawn to the beauty found in subtlety: the curve of a petal, the movement of a feather, the rhythm of foliage, or the way light travels across an uneven surface.
Working predominantly in shallow relief, I build and sculpt each piece by hand, allowing form and surface rather than colour to carry the work. My palette is intentionally restrained, often white or gold, so that shadow, depth and texture become part of the composition itself. As the light changes throughout the day, so too does the artwork—revealing details gradually and inviting closer observation.
This restraint is deeply connected to the way I live and create.
Life can be loud, fast and overstimulating. As a mother and someone whose mind is constantly imagining, processing and creating, art has become a place where I can return to stillness. It asks me to slow down, become present and pay attention. That same sense of quiet is what I hope to offer through my work.
Each relief is created slowly and individually. I do not use moulds to reproduce my sculptural works; every piece bears the subtle variations and marks of the hand that made it. This process allows me to honour both the material and the subject, balancing contemporary minimalism with a sense of reverence.
I want my work to encourage people to notice.
To notice light and shadow.
Texture and form.
The intricacy of the natural world.
The beauty that exists in things we often pass without seeing.
My work is inspired by nature, beauty and becoming—not only what exists around us, but the continual process of growth, change and discovering who we are.
I create refined works for curated spaces, each made slowly and with intention. Every piece is one-of-a-kind: a tactile expression of beauty, presence and the hand of its maker.
Ultimately, I hope my work creates a moment of pause—a quiet invitation to look more closely, feel more deeply, and find beauty in the details.
Crafted with intention. One-of-a-kind.
